I totally agree with Sam - well said. I know many people that have
moved into information work from professions in which they could have
earned a lot of money, in order to get more job satisfaction.
BUT(!), as Sam pointed out, we should still do everything we can to
gather evidence in order to 'press' for better salaries, and this
evidence gathering should be a process supported by employers.
I work (and have worked) with many dedicated individuals, from
'assistants' to 'senior managers' and they all have a broad range of
skills that are very valuable and attractive to potential employers
outside of the profession. I honestly believe that if the issue of
competitive remuneration is not addressed by all parties - Information
workers, employers and CILIP, then a lot of skilled and dedicated
individuals will be lost from the profession.
I'll get off my soap box now!

Well done to Sam on a sensible e-mail. IIRC we had a similar topic
before on the list before and the argument then as now, is that it is
not ALL about the money, there are other advantages to the job. Also it
is not like you were hoodwinked into the profession with promises of
mega cash only to find buttons in your first pay-packet
