LIBRARIANS NOT IN LIBRARIES: TRANSFERABLE SKILLS IN NON-TRADITIONAL
SETTINGS
Thursday 19 February 2004: 2.30-4.30pm (refreshments from 2.00pm)
Taylor Room, Sydney Jones Library, Liverpool University
http://www.liv.ac.uk/library/info/libinf_sjl.html
Price: £5 (£3 students/unwaged)
WHAT
Increasingly, library and information professionals are employed in posts
outside the traditional library setting. Several factors fuel this
development e.g. recognition by employers of the value of LIS skills in a
wider range of posts, the wish by employees to explore different
opportunities, changes in job markets and comparative salaries.
HOW
During this afternoon event, 5 librarians will discuss their own moves out
of traditional libraries into other areas of employment (and sometimes back
again). They will explain how they used their LIS qualifications and
experience to address new challenges, how their backgrounds benefited new
customers and what they themselves gained from the moves.
WHO
The event will be of interest to all LIS professionals and students: those
that are employed outside traditional libraries and those that are thinking
of such a move, as well as those that are settled on a career in libraries
but wish to see how traditional skills can be used in new and innovative
ways.
