The difference seems to be that they are already PhD students, not people
thinking about becoming one.
It is more acceptable to be critical about a system, if you are prepared to
try it first.
Sure, many PhD students do question the value of doing their PhD and are
interested in the opinions (which may be negative) of fellow post-grad
students and people who have completed their doctorates. However, criticism,
negativity and doubt from people who are not going through (or have
completed) the process is largely irrelevant to the debate.
Most folk on here (correct me if I am wrong) seem to be working towards
chartership or have recently completed and want to offer support and advice
to present candidates.
This is what I joined the list for (I only subscribed today), so reading a
flamewar started by someone who is not even prepared to give the chartership
system a chance, is a bit off-putting.
However, I'm not going to unsubscribe, as I do believe it will be a good
source of support, when things calm down!
For what it is worth I'm doing a PhD, but I also work part-time in a library
and I'm doing my chartership pro-rata. If I allowed the opinions of sceptics
get to me, I'd never find the enthusiasm or motivation to continue with
either and I don't want that to happen.
Ok, enough wiffling and back to work. Just wanted to say hello to the list,
I'm sure it will be useful to me.
