I agree that visiting libraries in other sectors can be extremely useful. I
visited several local libraries (with a few colleagues who were also Chartering)
and came back with new ideas, insights etc. If any ex-colleagues work locally
they may be willing to spend some time with you? (e.g. we spent an interesting
and useful afternoon with an ex-staff member from here who now works in a
local law firm's library). If no offers come up thorugh this list, it's
definitely worth phoning/emailing a few local places direct (friends' children's
schools, workplaces, the local public library/Uni etc) to see if they'd be
willing to spend a short time with you. Most people are very willing to spend
some time showing an interested outsider what they do, as long as you give them
enough time to plan it :-)
I'm very glad your supervisor sees the value of these visits. They can help you
bring new ideas and insights to your job, so giving your employers some payback
for the time they give you for visits (just in case your increased motivation
wasn't enough ;-)
