many members of the list…Thank you all for your helpful postings and
apologies for not responding to you all individually…
The Benefits of Chartership seem to vary wildly but so far 30 people have
responded to this posting and the responses can be summarised thus;
1) Does your organisation offer any additional support to Chartership
candidates? e.g. time off to write up, help with the submission fee
Nothing: 10
Moral support offered: 3
CILIP annual subscription paid: 2
Printing costs paid for: 2
Training Courses paid for: 2
Time off to write up (unspecified length): 2
Time off to write up (1 day): 1
Time off to write up (2 days): 7
Time off to write up (3 days): 2
Time off to attend events (paid): 9
Time off to attend events (unpaid): 1
Work time allocated for Professional reading/Professional development: 4
Candidate to personally fund any training courses attended: 1
Submission fee paid: 2
2) Does your organisation offer you any incentives to become a chartered
member of CILIP? e.g. change of job title/grade or movement within the
salary scale.
Nothing offered/no benefits: 20
Penalty for not chartering e.g. no further progression past salary bar: 1
Regrading: 7
Move up Salary Scale: 7
Trigger off pay review: 1
My attention has also been drawn to a previous posting on LIS-CILIP-REG
from Sally Maitland that canvassed opinion on “Chartership and salaries”
posted on 23rd March 2004 which concluded “…organisations that offer a
financial benefit to LIS employees on chartering were in the minority –
just under a quarter (16 out of 63) of people who replied said they had or
would receive an automatic pay rise…”
