**Apologies for cross-posting**
Hello,
A big thank you to everyone who responded to my recent plea for Route B PPDP
tips. Several people have asked me to share some of the tips I received so
here are a few extracts that I found helpful (I hope people do not mind me
sharing their words of wisdom?!):
"....the PPDP is designed to enable CILIP to see that you are on the right
track and to advise you if not.... I don't think the PPDP is the most
crucial part of the process - and you don't have to stick to it religiously
over the next 2 years....".
"....I suggest you start by having a look at the template for route A
training and development plan. You can find this among the material at the
back of the "Regulations and notes of guidance ..." (2002). Have a look at
the headings and learning objectives there, and see if you can adapt some of
them for you plan.
Annual appraisals at work often result in training and development plans for
individual employees. Perhaps you have one from your appraisal, that would
be another source of suggested items to include. Have a chat with your line
manager, and tell your manager that you are embarking on route B, and see if
she/he can help you to compile your plan.
Look through the CILIP magazines "Update" and "Gazette" and study the
calendar of events. Can you get along to some meetings...? ...It is very
useful to meet people from other sectors, e.g. public libraries, academic
libraries, workplace libraries, etc....You might also want to come along to
a "registration for chartering" event.....".
"...my training plan includes meetings with HR, IT etc and the head of
department for things like budgeting so that I can discuss the area with
them, and then do some 'critical analysis' afterwards. If your organisation
has other departments maybe that would be a possibility..."
"...I contacted CILIP and they confirmed what the handbook hints at: you
don't need to send the PPDP in with the registration form. It can be sent in
up to 6 months later....My understanding is that they can be as long or as
short as you want them to be....they are just a guide for us to use to
identify training needs and to use to ensure all the areas we have to cover
in chartership are covered....".
I hope this helps other Route B-ers about to prepare their plans and thanks
once again to all those who helped me,
Best wishes,
Teresa Milam
