Hi
The Microsoft Word word count is only a (vague) summary of your actual
word count - it takes the correct readings from the first couple of
lines (I think maybe on each page) and then applies that to the rest of
the page or document - I noticed this when writing my MSc that Microsoft
were way out! I ended up counting every word - which was hell........
This was confirmed when a friend was writing another word restricted
project, and the discrepancies were scary.
Hope this helps

Subject: Re: Word count?
This business with the Microsoft Word word count was something that I
discovered writing my dissertation. There are actually 2 ways of doing
a
word count, and the 2 of them can give hugely different results (in
formatted documents). I found it was worth checking them both and then
using the word count that was closest to your target!
The methods are: 1) Go to "Tools" then "Word Count" (the obvious one!).
Or 2) Go to "Tools", "Options" for Spelling and Grammer. Turn on the
Grammer checker and then check the "Readability Statistics". This then
gives you a word count at the end of a spell check.
It may be worth checking the other method to see what it thinks your
word
count is! It may help,
Hannah
