True but it's also about feeling valued, and it doesn't help to be paid a small amount. We weren't "hoodwinked" but to be fair it would be nice to get paid somewhere in the region of what other people in professional posts with degrees are getting. Other careers say they are in it for the satisfaction eg. nurses and teachers, but they get paid more than us.
Also, it doesn't help us in the long run to be thought of as a boring career with low pay if we want to have another generation of librarians following us. At the moment the profession as a whole is an ageing one with the slightly over a third being within the age group to retire within the next 5(ish) years, if we don't think about either upping our status or our pay soon people just aren't going to be information professionals/librarians etc. This leaves us in a bit of a sticky situation as you can imagine. We need to make people see our value and reward us for that if we want to see our profession continue.
Slightly depressing i grant you but the truth none-the-less.

Well done to Sam on a sensible e-mail. IIRC we had a similar topic before on the list before and the argument then as now, is that it is not ALL about the money, there are other advantages to the job. Also it is not like you were hoodwinked into the profession with promises of mega cash only to find buttons in your first pay-packet
Shane.
