OK, sometimes you can't see something right in front of your nose, I just
went through a whole debugging process including dumping a debug log from
edg-rm to see something which should have been obvious. The RAL bdii at
least has a whole load of extra catalogues which are apparently being
published by DESY and Sara, and among them I see:
GlueServiceURI:
http://grid-rc.desy.de:8080/cms/edg-local-replica-catalog/serv
Bingo! DESY is publishing an "alternative" cms catalogue, and rather than
giving a useful error message edg-rm apparently just takes the second one.
Likewise:
http://grid-rc.desy.de:8080/dteam/edg-local-replica-catalog/services/edg-lo
Maybe some could ask DESY to stop doing that? And indeed add a check for
duplicates to the routine monitoring. (And maybe cms could look to see where
their files are registered!)

PS Doing it like this makes it so much easier ...
edg-rm --vo=cms pi | grep cms
VO used : cms
LRC endpoint :
http://grid-rc.desy.de:8080/cms/edg-local-replica-catalog/services/edg-local
-replica-catalog
RMC Endpoint :
http://grid-rc.desy.de:8080/cms/edg-replica-metadata-catalog/services/edg-re
