Yes indeed you are right about NOx since thay are strong oxidizing factors
(with an acid potential) able to affect collections : any organic material
but also stones (limestone especially). I do think the "smog busting paint"
is an excellent discovery. Reading the post about it, I see it is conceived
to be used outdoor (because the rain water is necessary to disolve the
nitric acid produced by the reaction of NOx and Titanium oxyde). Therefore
it would be interesting to have further data for it's application indoor and
of possible ways to resolve the question of the paint washing versus risk of
acidification by residual NH2.

In any case, the idea of using a special paint with a strong affinity with
potential contaminants seems to be a very relevant one.

Best regards,

Bruno

Bruno,

Yes, indoor-generated pollutants are a problem, especially the persistent
organic pollutants you discuss in your first email. However, we should NOT
forget that outdoor-generated pollutants also pose a risk to collections,
especially those not in micro climates. NO2 and NO are still relevant
pollutants in all buildings and museums. Anything that can be done to
reduce or eliminate them from the museum environment is beneficial for the
collection.

Regards,
Cecily
