I'd be interested to know how many people have made use of this database
- is it used/appreciated by library patrons? Has anyone asked whether
it can be networked?
Many thanks

Greetings - Reference works for Violin Makers can be very expensive.
Welcome to the 21st century ! This work is a DATABASE, and it contains
more
entries than several of the standard references - COMBINED. But - it's
price
is less than a single fine book on the subject. It's already in use at
several major universities.
It's the Violin Makers Database (version 3.0).
It contains data for 19,506+ violin and bow makers !
A database has a great advantages over standard books and documents:
You can
easily search on any piece of data - names, dates, places, values.
Books are organized in ONLY one order: by Last name.
The Violin Makers Database allows you to sort, or search for the data
any
way that is best for you. Using a book, try searching for how many
known violin
makers, whose last name ends in 'sson', worked between 1700 and 2000?
With a database, it's easy. (The answer is 143)
How many of those are from Sweden ? (124)
What Italian maker with 'zini' in his lastname worked in Florence,
Italy?
(Giovanni Gaetano Pazzini)
How much has a Giovanni Bussetto brought at auction recently?
($248, 710)

Baxter' Database of Violin and Bow makers is economically priced at
$75. It
comes to you on a CDRom for installation on your PC computer (sorry,
no MACs)
PS - there are also over 400 illustrations of the violinmaking art in
the
database, plus over 2000 labels and many bows.
Best regards, Ed Baxter
