CILIP members vote overwhelmingly for flat rate subscription system
Ballot represents "clear vote of confidence in direction Institute is
heading"
By a margin of more than three to one, members of CILIP: the Chartered
Institute of Library and Information Professionals have voted in favour of
comprehensive reform of CILIP's subscription system, which should see the
majority of personal members paying the same subscription rate by 2008.
The results of the ballot were as follows:
Total number of votes cast: 5022
Votes in favour of option 1 (flat rate with concessions by 2008): 3880 Votes
in favour of option 2 (income-related system with inflation increase): 1124
Spoiled papers: 18 Percentage voting in favour of subscription reforms: 77%
"This is excellent news for CILIP, and a real vote of confidence in the
direction the Institute is heading," said CILIP's Chief Executive Bob McKee
when the result was announced. "It means that we can really start to go for
membership growth."
The postal ballot was called for by members attending CILIP's Annual General
Meeting last month. At the meeting, CILIP's Honorary Treasurer Andrew Wale
presented details of the proposed subscription reforms and explained why
they were necessary to enable CILIP to expand its membership. "This
decisive vote now means that we should be able to renew more and more
memberships automatically in future years, and devote ever greater efforts
to recruiting new members, instead of having to divert staff activity into
retaining existing members," Mr Wale said.
Over the next three years, most CILIP personal members will see their
subscriptions move progressively towards a flat rate. However, lower paid
members' costs will also be safeguarded, because they will be able to
continue to pay at lower rates reflecting their incomes, as now. In
addition, the Prompt Payment discount will be extended immediately to
members who opt to pay in instalments by Direct Debit. Up to now, this
discount has only been available to members who are able to pay in full
within the first two months.
