The keynote speaker will be Richard Hoggart. Born in Leeds in 1918, this
world-famous author of "The Uses of Literacy" studied at the University
of Leeds in the late 1930s among a total of only 1500 students.
Highlights will include his memories of Vice-Chancellor Sir James
Baillie and his Rolls Royce, as well as the inspiration the young
Richard Hoggart received from Professor Bonamy Dobree. After graduating
in 1939 from Leeds with an MA in English, and following active war
service, Professor Hoggart went on to win broad critical acclaim for
over a dozen books and more besides. His address will offer some
thoughts on the past, present and future of the University of Leeds.
