One of these things you learn and never forget, obviously useless! But I
recall reading stuff on FOB back in the 80s and the yanks were definite that
it was denatured haemoglobin which gave the positive result, the bit that
really sticks in my mind was something bleeding proximal to the ligament of
Treitz! Sick mind or what?
What confuses me is that blood from a large bowel tumour is
denatured....by.....what? I didn't think there were any digestive enyzmes in
the large bowel. And yes I did read the studies on using FOB as screening
tests for large bowel tumours but the denatured haemoglobin question has
only just popped into my mind.
