I was disturbed at my desk this morning by the noise of workmen digging up
the path that runs down the side of our house. They were replacing two lamp
standards (a) because the old ones needed ladder access to maintain and
'ladders cause accidents' and (b) because the seal on the access panel
contained asbestos.
Does anyone know how much asbestos you have to inhale over what period of
time to raise your risk of developing mesothelioma by X%? No, neither do I.
I was explaining all this to my 17 year old daughter, who asked me why there
was such public paranoia regarding the potential risks of asbestos
inhalation, when people seemed quite content to stand next to others who
were smoking cigarettes. I have to admit I had no answer on this one either.
Discuss.
