Jacob Bronoski in his book 'The Ascent of Man' argued that the nomadic
existence powerfully limited the development of a tecnology and the
complexity of the societies that survived with it. However, as these people
adopted a settled pattern there was a flowering of the complexity of their
cultures perhaps because they could develop idea's and kit over time without
'it' being baggage that had to be carried. I still remember the scene of the
elderly member of the Bachtiari being left behind to die, being to frail to
cross the river for another season (despite it was probably shown last
40years ago).
