On an allied topic - many years ago the present Mrs Treharne Jones suffered
a locked knee in the middle of the night (don't ask!) and was in
considerable discomfort. Joint manipulation was attempted and rapidly called
off, so rather than call out the duty doc (I wasn't on call that night) I
gave her a shot of pethidine and diazepam which improved matters
dramatically and all was then well.
I then filled out an 'immediately necessary treatment' form which went to
the LMC and was discounted as being 'not in the spirit of the regulations'.
I did ask the LMC where the borderline lay for these things - presumably a
next door neighbour would have qualified - but unsurprisingly they failed to
come up with an answer.
