I just wish there was more consensus among psychiatrists about what to do in
puerperal psychosis. Some of them say it's just a form of bipolar illness,
others say it's a separate condition. Initially my psychiatrist was very
keen to persuade me that I had to accept the bipolar label for life, but now
he's beginning to wonder whether or not I will need a lifelong mood
stabiliser. My psychiatric problems have only ever happened after childbirth
(2 episodes of "ordinary" postnatal depression after 2nd and 3rd children
and one episode of puerperal psychosis after 4th child) and I was fine for 6
years after my 3rd child. Anyway, I'm going to take it for a few years
probably, just to be on the safe side!
