This is a very interesting point.
It is not only racism that is a problem, but the fact that racial groups
become (justifiably) sensitive about the use of some terms by some people.
Notice the lengths some people will go to to describe one of two people when
one is black and the other is white, without mentioning their skin colour:
"The one with the longer hair", "The one that had a purple t-shirt" etc.
The most obvious difference is ignored for fear of 'racist overtones'.
However, is one had blonde hair and the other was a brunette, almost
everyone would say simply "the blonde guy" etc..
It's a great shame that this is necessary, because the rich variety of skin
tones that we all have is part of the great tapestry of life's variations.
