I am misunderstood, but not for the first time.
General practice is a business.
It must set it's rates, like solicitors, from the point of view of the
business.
The rates locums charge may or may not have some small relevance in the
overall equation, but that is all.

£450 per day
Dear Alistair and Allan,
The going rate in London is ~ 350/day and we have consistently been able
to obtain locums at this rate. I agree entirely that if the locum rate
elsewhere is being charged @ 500/day then the suggested rate of
remuneration is less than fair. I will pass these observations back to
Lin Horley for her comments.
I am now ducking out of the fray to go sailing for the next 9 days
during which time I will be incommunicado ... by choice!

re Fair remuneration etc
Partners in my practice bring in £800/working day gross. @ approx 50%
expenses we net £400/working day.
Actually with holidays and bank holidays and the fact that we are on a 4
day week the net figure comes to £555. So £450 would not cover my net
earnings for a day absent from the practice, and would contribute
nothing to the expenses of the practice. Imagine all partners going away
and working for £450/day elsewhere - your business would soon collapse!
And you are being paid NOTHING for enormous expertise in IT
No wonder they are desperate.
I have been invited about 4 times and have so far refused due to
inadequate pay.

Dear Laurie,
It may appear fair to you but when locums cost £500 per day you
will get the attendence you currently have. Costs of attending above
cost of partner doing the day Replacement of seeing patients at practice
locum cost + 10% (as 10% just told to re book with partner when he is
back!) Payment to partners for doing the work that day the locum will
not do. (another 10%) Disruption costs of reorganising/replaceing school
runs as one parent away at relevent time Some token of payment to the
poor soul that goes as recognition that the skills they have where
appreciated? Extra value for delivering this required service at very
short notice??
£450 + expenses and locum costs I would take to my partners as a
reasonable proposal, at your proposed fee scale I see I should be
removing IT from the area's I have to keep up to speed in appraisal as
it is not economically viable. Alistair
