That is very odd.
As I understand it:-
RJ11 modular plugs and sockets have 4 positions ("pins")
RJ12 " " " " " 6 "
RJ45 .............................................. 8 of course
So an RJ11 plug will fit an RJ12 or RJ 45 socket and RJ12 would fit an
RJ45
but it can't work th other way round.
The ADSL connection only needs two wires. I'm not sure if that is
provisioned
as a single twisted pair or as two twisted pairs, with each wire having
a
ground wire alongside it.
My ADSL unit here has an RJ11 plug with the two central connectors wired
and
the outside ones not.
You can use Cat 4 or better for long runs.
