At the risk of boasting, I've had to raise quite a lot of money for
expeditions in my time, particularly for young people. some tips: major
companies only sponser if they think they'll get publicity out of it. they
have fixed sponsership budgets, get hundreds of requests (some v dodgy) and
really only go for major names or completely loopy things which get a quick
, +ve public appeal in the tabloids. She should try doing it naked with Euro
2004 Diabetes care tattoed in body paint all over!!! Seriously you'll get
better money, thoguh not large individual amounts, by asking locally. be v
active. simply putting an ad in the papaer or getting the local press to do
a spot on her is not going to get her far. You'll need to do the press and
then send letters with copy of the article around. reckon on 1 +ve reply for
every 50 letters sent and reckon on 100 letters per £50 quid raised. The
Expeditionary Advisory Centre at the Royal Geographical Society has an
excellent publication on rasing sponsership as doers the Everest Foundation
and Alpine Society. the British Schools Exploring Society at the RGS has
reams on sponsership rasing for young people. All have web sites. Sadly a
diabetic walking up Kili is not major news for big companies and i',m
pleasently surprised shes raised this amount so far! truely best of luck and
I wish I was going with her. More advice if wanted off list.
