A Celebration of UK Sea Level Science and Launch of the UK
NTSLF together with WAVENET at the Royal Society 16-17
February 2004
The meeting at the Royal Society on 16 and 17 February 2004 is intended
to be a 'Celebration of UK Sea Level Science', there being in our opinion
few other countries with as wide a set of expertise in sea level-related
research, but there not having been a major sea level meeting such as this
one in the UK for some years. The meeting will be held in the Kohn Centre
and will be based primarily on presentations by UK researchers, with
a small number of distinguished guests invited from abroad. A small
number of stands and posters will be displayed in the New City of London
Room next to the Kohn Centre.
The meeting will also mark the launch of the UK National Tidal & Sea
Level Facility (NTSLF) which has been established as a grouping of the
various sea level activities of the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory (POL)
and British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) in close collaboration with
other groups which, like POL and BODC, are supported significantly in
their work by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Defra).
The meeting will also see the launch of the UK WAVENET which is
coordinated from Defra's Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture
Science (CEFAS). It is hoped (to be confirmed) that the Government Minister
responsible for Defra (and therefore indirectly both the NTSLF and
WAVENET) will attend an informal 'opening session'.
