ENVIRONMENT AGENCY RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP ON MINE WATERS AND WASTES

Three year fixed term contract, Senior / Principal RA Scale (£25K - £39K)

Closing date for applications: 30 January 2004.

The Environment Agency and the University of Newcastle wish to appoint a senior post-doctoral research fellow to investigate mining pollution and its remediation. The appointment will be made within the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, and the Fellow will be based in the University's new multi-disciplinary Institute for Research on the Environment and Sustainability.

The Research Fellow will provide the focus for the Environment Agency's research into mine waters and wastes, particularly developing understanding of the hydrological and biogeochemical processes associated with mine water rebound, mine spoil leachate generation and mine water remediation, placing these themes within the context of diffuse pollution management strategies at both local and catchment scales, with special emphasis on the promotion of durable and cost-effective treatment methods for mining-related pollution. The Fellowship has been created to inform the Environment Agency's approach to:
· identifying sustainable remediation technologies for dealing with discharges from coal and metal mines
· the effective management of catchment-scale issues in mine-impacted catchments under the Water Framework Directive
· mine water rebound, with particular reference to its implications for overlying aquifers.

You will have a PhD in mine water science / engineering, a minimum of three years post-doctoral experience (preferably in industry) in the implementation of sustainable measures for the remediation of polluted mine waters, direct experience of European research and practice in mine water management, a proven ability to publish in international peer-reviewed journals, and an established profile with key UK stakeholders (Environment Agency, Coal Authority, mining companies).

Further details and an application form are available from:
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/vacancies/vacancy.phtml?ref=D647R

For an informal discussion of this opportunity, please contact Professor Paul Younger (Newcastle University, Tel: 0191 222 7942) or Dr Hugh Potter (Environment Agency, Tel: 0121 708 4729).

Closing date for applications: 30 January 2004.
