I've run into this problem too. I found out that what I was doing
wrong was this:
avwmerge -t folder_of_imgs/*
vs
avwmerge -t folder_of_imgs/*.img
When you put /* it double counts the volumes (one when it reads the
.hdr and one when it reads the .img). If you specify to only merge the
img files, it works.
Hope that fixes it.
