Our Institutes focus on structural and functional MRI research studies
in healthy subjects and patients in the pre-clinical and early stages of
Alzheimer's disease. The work comprises development and application of
volumetric and voxel-based regression techniques for analysis of
cross-sectional and longitudinal structural MRI data, development and
application of multivariate statistical models for the analysis of
longitudinal data, and the development of new techniques to determine
changes in functional connectivity from functional MRI data in at risk
groups of Alzheimer's disease. Through the established collaboration
with the working group on neurochemistry and molecular biology in
dementia, we are developing statistical and explorative modelling
techniques to determine a multidimensional phenotype of Alzheimer's disease.

Since our Institutes represent the Reference Center for MRI within the
German Competency Network on Dementias, funded by the Federal Ministry
of Research, we have access to multi-center structural and functional
MRI data from a large cohort of patients with Alzheimer's disease and
other dementias, including yearly follow up studies. We are currently
involved in a number of international key research programs, such as the
National Institutes on Aging Neuroimaging Initiative. As a research
fellow, you will be expected to apply and develop anatomical protocols
and analysis techniques for structural MRI data, to assist in developing
and applying statistical and numerical methods to combine multimodal
data, including MRI, functional MRI, CSF markers and genomics. You will
have access to a wide array of different imaging and non-imaging data
from a large cohort of dementia patients and healthy control subjects,
based on single-center as well as multi-center samples. You will also be
expected to develop your own research projects that are consistent with
the mission of the centers. In addition, you will be expected to be
involved in writing grant proposals, supervising students in the
completion of their thesis, and writing manuscripts.

In order to qualify for this position you should be able to work in a
multi-disciplinary team consisting of physicians, psychologists,
engineers and physicists, you should be interested in brain research,
,particularly neurodegeneration and dementia (Alzheimer's disease), and
you should be able to apply basic research techniques to clinical
questions pertaining to diagnosis and treatment of dementia. Applicants
are sought with a Ph.D. or M.D. degree with a relevant background in
neuropsychology, (bio-)statistics or imaging. Knowledge and experience
with some of the standard imaging analysis tools (i.e. SPM, FSL,
Display, etc.) would be helpful. The candidate would be expected to
start in the Spring or Summer of 2004.

You should be fluent in spoken and written English, knowledge of German
is not necessary. The staff consists of researchers from Germany, USA,
and other European countries. The department is willing to assist in
language courses if there is interest. If the requirements are met,
there is the opportunity for completion of a habilitation thesis
(comparable with associate professorship).
