AFRICAN MIGRATION ALLIANCE WORKSHOP

10-11 MARCH 2005

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA

You are cordially invited to submit an abstract for consideration for the

African Migration Alliance Workshop. This workshop is organised by the Human

Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and the Department of Social Development

(DSD) and will be held in Pretoria, South Africa, 10-11 March 2005.

The workshop will focus on the emerging challenges of migration in Africa

(both across borders and within countries) and data issues around measuring

and monitoring migration on the continent.

It will provide the opportunity to researchers to share information regarding

migration on the African continent. At the moment, a significant amount of

research information on migration in Africa is being produced by African

researchers, as well as by non-governmental aid organizations, journalists and

others. However, this information is not yet coming together effectively to

support African governments in their efforts to bring greater stability to our

turbulent continent, and to lift Africa toward prosperity and a position of

international respect. At the same time, efforts by overseas researchers to

collect African demographic data so as to promote anti-poverty policies have

had relatively poor success over the last ten years: There is thus a need for

African researchers and research institutes in all the main regions to

collectively take the initiative in producing high-quality African statistics

that will be able to command respect in international circles.

This ambitious endeavour will aim to bring together the people who can

contribute to the development of more comprehensive migration data for Africa

as a whole. By doing this, it is hoped the Migration Alliance will be able to

help build greater stability and improved conditions for the work of

development. We hope that you or your institution would be interested in

actively participating in this effort to better understand the role played by

migration in the unfolding of Africa's future.

Format of the abstracts

Preference will be given to original papers from ongoing research based on the

topics of (1) the emerging challenges of migration in Africa (both across

borders and within counties) and/or (2) data issues around measuring and

monitoring migration on the continent. The research should contain an analysis

of primary or secondary data. Authors should note that limited funding is

available subject to the organisers' discretion.

The abstracts should be up to two pages in length and contain the following

information: title, author, institution, and contact details (telephone, fax,

e-mail, and alternative contact details).

The abstracts could be submitted in either English or French and should reach

us by 15 December 2004.

Abstracts should be sent to Mr Niel Roux
