The First International Conference on the Linguistics of Contemporary English

University of Edinburgh, 23 - 26 June 2005

Website: http://www.englang.ed.ac.uk/iclce/iclce2005.html

Abstracts deadline: 15th January 2005

We are pleased to announce that the First International Conference on the Linguistics of Contemporary English (incorporating the Second International Conference on the Phonology of English) will be held from
23 - 26 June 2005, at the University of Edinburgh.

BACKGROUND

The attention devoted to the linguistic phenomenon (or phenomena) known as English has resulted in a broad body of work in diverse research traditions, illustrating both the individual characteristics of the many Englishes, and the contributions that an understanding of these linguistic systems can make to our general knowledge of the human language faculty.

Our aims are (i) to encourage the cross-fertilisation of ideas between different frameworks and research traditions, all of which address the linguistics of English, and, furthermore, (ii) to promote discussion among researchers interested in linguistic theories (phonologists, syntacticians, variationists etc.) regarding what we mean when we use the word 'English' to describe the linguistic phenomena which we work to explain.

We therefore invite abstracts which deal with any aspect of the structure of contemporary varieties of English, in terms of their phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics etc., in any way which aims to be explanatory. Work on any variety (or number of varieties) is welcome, including variationist work which engages with issues of linguistic structure. We do not intend to accept abstracts which are purely historical, but work which brings in diachrony in order to explain the structure of Present-Day English is certainly welcome.

An International Conference on the Phonology of English was held in Toulouse in 2002 along these lines. We aim for the current conference to build on the success of that event, and to broaden out its scope to include discussion of all aspects of English.

Any enquiries about the conference should be sent to [log in to unmask]

INVITED SPEAKERS

The following have accepted invitations to speak at the conference
* Bas Aarts
* Luigi Burzio
* Lisa Green
* Peter Trudgill

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

Abstracts must be submitted by email - as files attached to a message - as per the details listed below. They should be sent to [log in to unmask] by *15th January 2005*.

Abstracts should be no longer than one side of A4, with 2.5cm margins, single-spaced, with a font size no smaller than 12, and with normal character spacing. All examples and references in the abstract should be included on the one single page, but it is enough, when referring to previous work, to cite "Author (Date)" in the body of the abstract - you do not need to include the full reference.

Please send two copies of your abstract - one of these should be anonymous and one should include your name, affiliation and email at the top of the page, directly below the title. The anonymous file will be used for refereeing, and the named file should be camera-ready, as it will be used in the abstracts booklet if the abstract is accepted.

Please use one of these formats for your abstract, in descending order of preference: pdf, Word, rtf, or plain text. If you need to use a phonetic font in your abstract, please either embed it in a pdf file, or use the SILdoulos93 font (precisely this font and no other), which can be downloaded for free from this site:
http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=encore-ipa.

You will, therefore, need to send an email with two attachments. The anonymous abstract should be named 'yoursurname-anon', and the non-anonymous abstract should be named 'yoursurname-name' (so if Karl Luick was submitting an abstract, he would send both luick-anon.pdf and luick-name.pdf). All abstracts will be reviewed anonymously by members of the organising committee and advisory board.

If you cannot send your abstract in this way, for whatever reason, please send us an email and we'll arrange an alternative.

You may submit more than one abstract (either joint or single-authored) but we will only allow each person to present one paper, as this allows more people to take part in the conference, therefore we will only accept one abstract from any one person for presentation.

An overhead projector will, of course, be available, and it is likely that we can provide powerpoint facilities, if you notify us in advance.
If you need other technical equipment, please say so in the message accompanying your abstract and we will do our best to provide it, although this cannot be guaranteed.

We aim to finalise the programme and contact abstract-senders by 1st March. There are plans for publishing a peer-reviewed selection of papers from the conference, most likely in thematically coherent volumes.

  POSITIONS VACANT
**************************

MPI, Nijmegen

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is offering a postdoctoral staff position in the field of language comprehension.

It is a research position and involves no teaching responsibilities; furthermore, considerable technical support is available. The position will be available from the beginning of 2005 and has a term of appointment of 3 to 5 years, depending on experience.

Research at the institute in the area of language comprehension is centred on two main projects: "Decoding continuous speech" and "Phonological learning for speech perception"
(see recent Annual Reports on the MPI website). The research includes strong components of cross-linguistic comparison and computational modelling. Current members of the group have primary research interests in infants' development of language and word perception, and in adult processing of spoken language in native and non-native languages. There is research in progress on a variety of topics in phonetic perception, the processing of suprasegmental structure, the recognition of word forms and the segmentation of continuous speech. The group currently includes five scientists and seven students working towards a PhD degree.

The position on offer has previously been held by Natasha Warner (1998-2001) and Taehong Cho (from 2001), both of whom are phonologists with an experimental, i.e. "laboratory phonology" research approach. It is this kind of phonological expertise, combined with a willingness to collaborate experimentally in projects on the perception of spoken language, which we are seeking for this position. The previous incumbents' expertise in non-Germanic languages was also very useful to us. Young scientists with a completed Ph.D. in a relevant field are encouraged to apply. An important criterion is a demonstrated ability to publish research findings. Applications should include a c.v. and the names of two referees who would be willing to write letters of recommendation; examples of published work and a cover letter describing research interests would also be helpful.

Send applications to:

Ohio State University

The Department of Linguistics at the Ohio State University seeks candidates for a tenure-track position in phonetics at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting Autumn 2005. The area of specialization within phonetics is open, although preference will be given to candidates with broader interests in spoken language processing, including sociophonetics and psycholinguistics -- that is, to candidates whose interests complement and build on existing strengths of the department in ways that will promote collaborative advising and research across the department and the larger linguistics community at the Ohio State University. The successful candidate must have a record of excellence in teaching and research, and have completed the Ph.D. by the time of the appointment.

The new assistant professor will be expected to be active in research and publication, to meet standard departmental teaching requirements and to perform service duties as required by the department and the university.

Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2004 and will continue until the position is filled. Interviewing for the position will begin at the LSA annual meeting in January 2005.

Dossiers consisting of a letter of interest, current curriculum vitae and the names of three references should be sent to the Phonetics Search Committee.

The Ohio State University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. Women, minorities, Vietnam-era veterans, disabled veterans, and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
