Although I haven't seen it in years, I have been thinking about Birth of a
Nation and the violence at the centre of American history -- Salem, the
American revolution, the Civil War, the lynchings, the civil rights
movements, not to mention all the guns and assassinations. Yet, as a
Canadian watching from the sidelines, I have never before felt this
unbridgeable gap or difference, or felt this baffled by America -- the right
wing anyway. It seems that 48 % of the US population is also feeling this
way. A strange, dark pass, indeed. My sincere condolescences to those in
despair.
