You may want to look at Rob Spadoni's work which deals with horror
films (Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.) and early sound, specifically the
voice. You should be able to download his article,
"The Uncanny Body of Early Sound Film" in The Velvet Light
Trap 51 (Spring 2003).
