GLOBAL JUSTICE AND THE ENVIRONMENT
RESEARCH ASSOCIATE/FELLOW - 3 years - Starting salary £18,893 - £26,327 a year; potential progression to £28,279 a year.
TWO PhD STUDENTSHIPS - 3 years - Maintenance Grant £10,500.
The UK Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB) has awarded Dr Simon Caney and Dr Derek Bell funding to engage in research on global justice and the environment. The award funds a Research Associate (full-time for three years based at either Newcastle, UK or Birmingham, UK) and two PhD students (one to be based at Birmingham and one to be based at Newcastle).
Aim of the research: Environmental issues, such as climate change, air pollution and wilderness preservation, raise important questions of global justice. For example, who should pay to protect future generations from the effects of climate change? Should there be a human right to clean air? Despite the importance of environmental issues, environmental justice has remained in the margins of philosophical discussions of global justice. This project will develop and defend a theory of global justice that includes principles of environmental justice that take seriously the special features of environmental issues.
The project will be managed and supervised by Dr Simon Caney. The project is structured so that the participants can develop their own original philosophical work within a common framework, which ensures that they are contributing to the overall goal of a systematic study of global justice and the environment. The project team will meet regularly to share research material and discuss ideas to facilitate the production of individual and collaborative publications.
