Flood Risk Management Research Consortium (FRMRC) - Geotech Stability of
Embankments
A vacany exists for a post-doc research assistant PDRA from October 2004 to
carry out a combination of lab, field and modelling work on the effect of
fine fissures/cracks on the stability of flood defence embankments. The work
would be based at Strathclyde University under the guidance of Professor
Mark Dyer. It is part of the wider FRMRC that was launched this April by
Elliot Morley MP Minister of State for Environment at DEFRA. The research
consortium is funded by EPSRC/DEFRA/Environment Agency/UKWIR. This is an
ideal opportunity for a researcher who wishes to work at the interface
between hydraulics and geotechnical engineering with an appreciation of
unsaturated soil mechanics. To put the work in context there approximately
35,000 km of flood embankmnets in the UK with an annual budget of £500
million.
If intersted please contact Professor Mark Dyer for more details.
