KEELE UNIVERSITY
SCHOOL OF CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS & SCHOOL OF EARTH SCIENCES AND GEOGRAPHY
PhD RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP
"Non-destructive evaluation of corroded steel reinforcement in concrete
using ultrawide-band radar and numerical modelling"
Under a new EPSRC funded project into the development of novel
instrumentation for the non-destructive evaluation of concrete, there is
a vacancy at Keele University for a Research Student (eligible for
registration for a PhD degree) based jointly in the School of Chemistry
and Physics and the School of Earth Sciences and Geography.
The project concerns the design, construction, modelling and bench/field
evaluation of ultrawide-band radar and electromagnetic test devices for
the identification, characterisation and evaluation of steel corrosion
in reinforced concrete structures. The project is a £400k joint venture
between Keele University, Manchester Metropolitan University and 6
industrial and government organisations in the UK and Europe.
The successful applicant will be involved with development of
§ New operational methodologies and processing/visualisation techniques
for current, proprietary Ground Penetrating Radar systems.
§ Sophisticated, 4D numerical modelling techniques for the evaluation of
time-varying GPR and EM fields in a range of concrete structures.
§ New electronic test systems and instrumentation based on inductive EM
and RF propagation responses.
§ Programmes of laboratory and field data collection.
Applicants should have a good first degree in geophysics, engineering,
physics or materials science and will undergo a comprehensive research
training programme based in the faculty of Science.
The standard EPSRC funding stipend is applicable (£10,500 per year from
Oct 2004 with fees paid at EU rates). An immediate start is possible
although it is likely that the successful applicant will commence the
studentship sometime between June & October 2004.
