Below is an announcement of a lecture on Wednesday the 17th of November at
the Midland Hotel in Derby, organised by the East Midlands Geotechnical
Group and the Permanent Way Institution :

Subject : The Role of the Network Rail Mining Engineer
Venue: Midland Hotel Derby (opposite Derby train station)

Speaker : John Stothard - National Mining Engineer, Network Rail
Abstract :
The Mining Team provide a national consultancy minerals service to Network
Rail Engineers, Managers and Property Sales Surveyors on all issues arising
from mineral extraction and related activities. The presentation will
outline the role of the Mining Team in protecting the interests of Network
Rail from the legacy of ancient mining beneath the railway infrastructure,
current surface and underground extraction operations, waste management and
landfill facilities. The Team also provides advice on mineral valuation,
wayleave/easement values and assists Property colleagues in the negotiation
of such rights with third parties.
Brief case studies of the Team's involvement with a few significant mining
remediation schemes will also be discussed.
Speaker's Biography :
John Stothard entered the mining industry in 1970 as an apprentice mine
surveyor, working at collieries throughout the National Coal Board
Doncaster Area. He obtained Mining Qualification Board certification in
1974 and became a Professional Associate of the R.I.C.S. (Minerals
Division) in 1982. In 1983, he joined the British Railways Board and was
appointed to the post of National Mining Engineer in February, 2001.
