"...Pharmaceutical expenditure on medicines accounts for between 10% (Holland) and 18.5% (Spain) of total healthcare expenditure across Europe. In an attempt to contain this spending governments have introduced a variety of cost containment measures including price cuts, limited lists, delisting, incentives/disincentives for prescribers and patient co-payment. A relationship between the price of medicines and consumption has been shown1. For patients, one of the main concerns will be the level of out of pocket payment from their net income following tax and social insurance contributions. Patient co - payment for prescription medicines in Ireland amounted to EUR95.1 million in 20022. In this paper the level of patient co-payment for long term prescription medication across a range of European counties is considered..........."
