inclusions and exclusions
in the new europe
7th Biennial Conference: Society for Applied European Thought
in conjunction with the
Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava
Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, Comenius University, Bratislava
and Matej Bel University, Banská Bystrica
Tatranská Lomnica, Slovakia, 3-8 July 2005
Call for Papers
As previously, this conference provides a forum for critical,
interdisciplinary exploration of current European social, political and
philosophical horizons. It will be held for the first time in Slovakia, in
the spectacular Tatras Mountains. Our main focus will be on how notions
and practices of 'inclusion' and 'exclusion' feature in the contemporary
European conjuncture. We expect papers from the directly concrete ? How
are contemporary European societies, and the European Union itself, dealing
with problems around inclusivity and exclusion? ? to the relatively
abstract: How best can we approach the notion of an inclusive society
without compromising the need for recognition of difference and alterity?
What particular problems confront us here ? whether theoretically, or in
practice ? at the onset of the 21st century?
Among the specific topics and themes of the conference will be:
inclusivity in theory and practice
migration and asylum
political ideologies of exclusion
toleration and multiculturalism
universalism and particularism
negotiating 'otherness'
re-thinking identity and nationalism
liberalism, capitalism and citizenship
race, class and gender
developments in European civil society
prospects for the European Union
notions of 'community', present and future
We anticipate contributions from those working in these, among other
fields:
Political Theory Philosophy Sociology History Social Policy
Law Cultural Studies Education
The language of the conference will be English, the format based on
pre-circulated papers, and the cost £400, including accommodation, meals,
academic proceedings and organized events and excursions. A number of
subsidized places will be available.
Deadlines: for proposals (abstracts of up to 300 words), 30 November 2004;
for completed papers (to be pre-circulated), 1 March 2005
