Dear colleagues,
We have the pleasure to announce a PhD master class on the
topic: "Integrative research for the planning and management of sustainable
landscapes".
The course will be held in the Netherlands from 1-6 June 2004.
It offers opportunities for PhD students to be exposed to and actively
discuss a range of methodological approaches from the natural sciences to
landscape design with a team of international landscape researchers. The
course will specifically address the challenges facing students who wish to
integrate knowledge across disciplinary boundaries and between knowledge
cultures. Techniques for overcoming practical and theoretical problems will
be presented by the course teachers and discussed in relation to the
concrete projects of the participants.
The PhD master class has two main objectives:
1. It will provide insights into the different concepts and theories, which
exist in landscape research today for the management and planning of
sustainable landscapes. 2. It will give an overview over integrative
approaches (interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity) and discuss how
these can be applied successfully in landscape research.
PhD students from all countries that are involved in landscape research are
invited to participate. The course is organised by Bärbel Tress, Gunther
Tress, Paul Opdam and Gary Fry. The participation is limited to 25-30
students. Interested PhD students can now pre-register for the course. For
detailed information and registration please refer to
