Dear All,
First many thanks to those who replied to my query. Much to think about,
maybe too much for my ego to handle!
I tried to avoid my definition of what I believe I mean by the ego in my
original message but I realise now that this was a forlorn hope as a number
of the replies I have had ask me exactly what I mean by the term. So here
goes.
My definition of the ego is as follows:
The ego is that part of the self that has been modified by direct influence
of the external world. It represents reason and common sense and it
contrasts to the id (the unconscious) that contains the passions. It
controls and mediates between the conscious and unconscious.
The ego exists bewteen the 'self' and the 'unself'. it shapes and forms the
conflicting sides of human nature, giving it substance and identity. The
ego is the means by which we know ourselves.
Hope that this is of some help. It seems to make sense to my own experience
of what I understand the term to imply, and poses fundemental questions as
to the nature of my own creativity. hench my interest in the subject.
