The Economic and Social Research Council wishes to appoint a Datasets Co-ordinator to lead in the development and implementation of a National Datasets Strategy for the social sciences. The Co-ordinator post will commence from October 2004, or as soon as possible thereafter, and run until September 2007 in the first instance.
The broad aim of the National Datasets Strategy will be to provide a coherent framework through which to develop and maintain a robust UK social science data infrastructure. The strategy will engage a wide range of key stakeholders, including the Office for National Statistics (ONS), other national statistical agencies, the Cabinet Office, a range of Charitable Trusts and Foundations and other Research Councils. The main objectives of the Strategy will be to establish:
the key datasets required to meet the needs of the UK social science research community, and the extent to which these are already available;
strategies for closing the gaps in current provision, and for prioritising future provision;
common standards in the processing and preparation of data and associated documentation;
clear, common and complimentary protocols over access arrangements to key datasets;
mechanisms for resolving key issues surrounding ethics, disclosure and confidentiality;
training and capacity building strategies to promote the effective analysis of datasets
This is a senior appointment, which offers the opportunity to shape the future strategic direction of national dataset provision across the UK social science community. Applications are welcome from researchers based at UK Higher Education Institutions, other Research Institutes eligible for ESRC funding, or from suitably qualified candidates from outside the academic community. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate an ability to provide intellectual leadership, recognising the key research challenges facing the social sciences, and a strong awareness and knowledge of qualitative and quantitative datasets. S/he will be expected to bring together and work closely with a wide range of stakeholders concerned with the collection, supply and delivery of key datasets to the social science community.
The post also includes provision for research. The successful candidate will have the option to conduct a specific research project as part of the appointment.
Applicants are asked to submit a CV and covering letter of application by the closing date of 5pm on Friday 23 April 2004.
