Sixth Workshop on Business Process Modeling, Development, and Support
(BPMDS'05)
Business Processes and Support Systems: Design for Flexibility
Porto, Portugal, June 13-14 2005
In conjunction with CAiSE'05 http://gnomo.fe.up.pt/~caise/
Abstract
------------
In the dynamic business environments of today, associated as they are with
new methods, new practices, and an increasing number of both mergers and
technological innovations, flexibility is becoming a new guiding principle
in the design of business processes. This workshop is meant as a forum for
discussing the challenge of obtaining the fit between the flexibility
needed in business processes and the flexibility supported by BPS systems.
It is the sixth in a series of international workshops on business process
modeling, development, and support, designed as a meeting place for both
researchers and practitioners in the fields of business development and
business application software development. The main topics for the proposed
workshop include: (a) requirements for, and classification of, different
types of flexibility in business processes; (b) concepts and techniques for
modeling flexible BPS systems in intra- and inter-organizational
environments; (c) tools, techniques, and conceptual frameworks for
analyzing, creating and maintaining an aligned level of flexibility in
business processes and BPS systems. In addition, any other topics that
concern the flexibility of business processes and BPS systems are of
interest for generating discussions at this forum. The discussion will
start prior to the workshop, facilitated by a mailing list and an
interactive web site. The results of the discussions will be summarized in
a working document that will be produced after the workshop.
On motivation, topics for discussions, submissions, etc., see full CFP at:

Form
-------
The aim of the workshop is discussions, rather than presentations. A
position paper does not necessarily need to include answers to the problems
described above. Position papers that raise relevant questions, or describe
successful or unsuccessful practice, or describe experience will all be
welcome. All position papers will be published on our website before the
workshop, so that everybody can learn about the problems that are important
for other participants.
To facilitate interaction between participants, the organizers will try to
compile a list of questions that are of common interest for the group. The
list will be published on our website well in advance of the workshop. Any
proposals of what should be included in the list will be appreciated.
Participants may submit answers to these questions before the workshop;
such answers will be added to the workshop web site.
Expected Results
--------------------------
Based on the discussions, a working document will be produced to summarize
the results and outline the promising directions in the field.
After the workshop, the workshop material together with a selection of the
best papers will be considered for publishing in a special issue of an
international journal, probably, Software Process: Improvement and Practice
(SPIP).
