U.K. Teens To Receive Text Messages On Safe Sex
November 16, 2004
A charity in the United Kingdom is offering U.K. teenagers text messages on
safe sex as part of an initiative to reduce teen pregnancies and sexually
transmitted diseases, BBC News reports.
Teenagers send a text message to U.K. charity Brook to access a menu of
options that allows them to access automated information about sexual
health issues, such as STDs, contraception, counseling and information on
their nearest youth sexual health service.
"Our new texting service will mean more young people have the facts
literally at their fingertips, giving them an alternative to our existing
confidential online and helpline inquiry services," Brook Chief Executive
Jan Barlow said. "Technology has come a long way in the 40 years since
Brook was established, and we aim to make the most of those changes" (BBC
News, 11/11).
The United Kingdom has one of the highest rates of unplanned pregnancy and
abortion in the world, and reports of STDs have jumped from 449,666 in 1995
to 708,083 in 2003 (Agence de Presse Medicale/Yahoo News, 11/12
