Hi Ceri,
Pitirim Sorokin defines 3 major cultural super systems that waxa and wan over the course of the history of every nation, every civilization. We are in the West experiencing the decline of a 600 yaar long sensate culture. The other two forms are ideational-like the middle ages, and idealistic-like the Rennaisance. There's more to these systems than I can say now, I just wanted to point out that there are 3 kinds of truth systems that are mixed in each system. Revelation, is an aspect of an ideationl age, and less so in idealistic ages. In any event you are right that modernism was a child of the sensate and it has no place for the truth of revelation. But that is changing.
Pick up a copy-or order it online-of The Crisis of our Age. This is a series of lecutures that nicely sums up Sorokin's larger more imposing 4 volume "Social and CUltureal Dynamics. If your're really interested you can get an abricdged version of Social and Cultureal Dynamics. I got a copy of "The Crisis of Our Age", online for ninety cents.
Take care, Jon
