F90. You are probably thinking of namelist. List-directed internal I/O
was standardized in f90... and by now so many current (but not older)
f77 compilers accept it that I have to keep correcting people who think
it was standard f77. This is the first time I've had to make the
correction in the other direction. :-(
And no, I don't know a good reason why namelist for internal I/O waited
so much longer. Probably just because there was so much less demand.
Lots of people asked for list-directed internal I/O...and others just
assumed it worked and tried it without asking. I probably tried it
early in f77 days myself and had to look up why it failed. I don't
recall the specific instance, but I just suspect I would have tried,
not knowing then.
