I'm not sure whether it is really an appropriate answer to your
question,
but when you talk about being able to change storage formats, that
sure brings polymorphism to mind. Heck. Translate the Greek(? I think)
and polymorphism is "many forms", which even sounds a lot like
changeable format.
Other parts of your request do also sound like classic applications
of polymorphism.
But I know you are familiar with polymorphism, so maybe it doesn't
fit as well as your posting makes it sound to me. On the other hand,
maybe you just didn't think of it in this case... or maybe you were
looking for something that works with today's compilers, which would
be understandable.
