compiler dependent. some compilers give you the option to use more than 73
columns for fixed source formatted code (f77). ibm's xlf is one such
example. the other options include:
a) modify the code to use 73 columns (an editor like emacs can be very
helpful in such cases)
b) convert to fortran 90
