I proposed accessors yesterday at the J3 Fortran committee meeting in
progress. The process under way at this moment is a decision whether to
put proposals on the "We'll consider this idea further" list. They didn't
get onto the list. This doesn't mean it's a bad idea for Fortran; it
just means that members didn't like it well enough, or didn't think it
was important enough (compared to other stuff they'd like to see done),
or thought it was too big a project to fit into the schedule of work.
The list has roughly five times as many proposals on it now as we can
implement in the next standard, so lots of other good ideas are going to
bite the dust before the content of the 2008(?) standard is settled.
BTW, if you've ever wondered how the members of the Fortran committee
get selected, the answer is simple: Except for compiler vendors seeking
antitrust protection, we're self selected. In order to get onto the
committee, you come to a meeting as an observer. You get to vote on
informal ballots, but not formal ones. Then, if you pay your $800/year
fee to INCITS and show up at another meeting within a "reasonable" time
your meeting as a visitor is counted as your observer meeting, and you
get to vote right away. Alternatively, you can pay the $800 in advance
and come to your first meeting as an observer/member. There are four
meetings per year, usually in Las Vegas. If you miss too many meetings,
you lose your voting status and have to endure one meeting as an
observer before regaining your voting rights. Meetings cost about $550-
$600, exclusive of travel expense. This includes lodging, living expense,
and a meeting fee that's presently $50.
