I don't think Mencken ever said that; reference please.
According to Bartlett's, he is said to have said, "Nobody ever
went broke underestimating the taste [or, sometimes, intelligence]
of the American public."
Though it also lacks an iron-clad attribution, this quotation
appears at least as applicable as the other to this discussion. :-)
