During the development of F90, there was a proposal
to incorporate this functionality with something that
I think was called "name-directed" I/O. Anyway, it was
far superior in many ways to "standard practice", but
still wasn't adopted. There probably should have been
more snickering on this one.
And I like to look at this from the other way around,
also. Two (of maybe three) of the most important "new"
features of F77 were not "standard practice": the
block IF and the character data type. This was when
"standard practice" was supposed to rule.
