Lectureship in Classics (1-Year Contract)
This appointment is to replace Dr. David Woods, who has been awarded a
Research Fellowship by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and
Social Sciences for the academic year 2004-5.
The successful candidate will be required to teach Roman History in all
three years of the Greek and Roman Civilisation undergraduate degree
programme and at MA level and Latin in second and third year.
Candidates should either have or be close to the completion of a PhD degree
in Classics and have validated qualifications in Latin. Prior experience of
teaching Roman History and Latin at undergraduate level will be an
advantage.

ELECTION OF A FIXED TERM COLLEGE AND FACULTY LECTURER IN CLASSICAL
LITERATURE
Christ Church, in collaboration with the University of Oxford Faculty of
Classics, hopes to make an election to a Fixed Term College and Faculty
Lecturership in Classical Literature for three years from 1 October 2004,
to cover Dr Dirk Obbink's Special Leave. The Lecturer will be required to
give tutorial teaching of up to six hours per week each term for or on
behalf of Christ Church, and to give eight hours of lectures or classes
during the year for the Classics the Faculty. The lecturer will be
appointed on an incremental scale starting at £11,439 p.a. (currently under
review), together with additional benefits. Applicants should be prepared
to teach a number of the mainstream papers and more popular options in
Classical Mods, in the Literature syllabus for the Honour School of Literae
Humaniores, and in Classics and Modern Languages. Willingness to play a
part in language teaching as well as literature is essential.

NTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE: THE OATH IN GREEK SOCIETY
June 30 to July 2, 2004

In spite of the fundamental importance of oaths across an enormously wide
range of social interactions throughout the ancient Greek world, there has
been very little research dedicated to this topic. This international
conference is designed to remedy this omission and to kick off a major
three-year project on the theme (funded by the Leverhulme Trust). More than
twenty papers will be presented on many aspects of the oath in Greek-
speaking societies in antiquity, including the employment
and functions of oaths in political, military, juridical, cultic and wider
social contexts, their deployment in literary texts, theoretical discussion
of them, and developments in oath practices resulting from Greeks' contacts
with other cultural and religious traditions.

The aim of this conference is to achieve, through a pluralistic approach, a
presentation of Roman myth and images that have their origins in eastern
cults and traditions. The discourse will engage with Augustus’
understanding and employment of these traditions in his attempt to
establish his right to rule, not only Rome, but also the rest of the known
world.
