Announcing the 2004 Midlands Classical Symposium:
Performing Civic Identity
26 May 2004
This year's one-day symposium, held at the Institute of Archaeology &
Antiquity (University of Birmingham), explores the ways in which
performative culture (and cultural performance) shaped the civilisations of
classical Greece and Rome. Papers explore questions of identity and
performance, and the articulation of citizenship as a locus of dialogue and
convergence between central ancient forms of discourse (e.g. rhetoric and
oratory, drama, lyric, historiography, philosophy).
Speakers include: Mary Beard (Cambridge), Andrew Feldherr (Princeton),
Niall Livingstone (Birmingham), Judith Mossman (Nottingham).
Registration fee (including coffee & lunch) £5
For further details and full programme, contact the organiser: Diana
Spencer ([log in to unmask]) IAA, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston,

The School of Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of
Leicester is pleased to announce that a number of bursaries are available,
as in previous years, for students registering for master's courses.
We run the following campus-based courses, of which the first two may be of
most interest to classical students:
MA Rome and its Neighbours (roughly half of which is taught by the
ancient history staff)
MA Landscape Studies (can be adapted to cater for Greek or Roman
interests)
   MA Professional Archaeological Practice
   MA Archaeology of Food
   M.Sc. GIS in Archaeology
Bursaries are normally awarded to the strongest applicants who do not have
other funding. Typically one or two bursaries of up to £700 are awarded in
each MA, though this varies according to the strength of the competition.
For further information, please contact Mrs Pamela Thornett on [log in to unmask]

We are proposing to launch a new academic journal entitled "Studies in
Greek Early Iron Age Archaeology" and would like to hear from people
interested in contributing in the following ways:
* as co-editors (TOP PRIORITY!)
* as members of the editorial advisory board/peer reviewers
* as article authors
The Greek Early Iron Age (ca. 1100-700 BCE), usually referred to as
the "Dark Age" of Greece, is a crucial, though relatively neglected period
of Greek history. The aim of the journal is to provide a forum in which to
discuss issues related to the archaeology of this period, including
theoretical and methodological perspectives, interpretation of material
culture and so forth.
All the best,

UMR 8585 - Centre Gustave Glotz
Table ronde des 21 et 22 mai 2004

conference SMT 18, to be held at Dijon, in France in November 2004.
The conference is organized by the Ecole des Mines de Paris and the
Université de Bourgogne.
There are four sections and I am in charge of Topic A, dedicated to:
“Arts and Surfaces”.
The conference website is:
http://www.congres-scientifiques.com/smt18/
The idea is to have a multidisciplinary discussion on the science and
technology of surface related phenomena for ALL MATERIALS EMPLOYED, i.e.
researches on any work of art or archaeological find, made of any sort of
material, on both theoretical and experimental approaches are welcomed.
We already have the participation of scholars belonging to important
institutions, such as for example the Louvre and the British Museum, but
also from European and non-European Universities.
Best wishes
Alessandra Giumlia-Mair
